What’s a Heat Pump?
Used as an alternative system to traditional central heating and air conditioning, a heat pump uses the outside air to heat a controlled space in the winter and cool it in the summer. There are three main types of heat pumps: air-to-air, water source, and geothermal. All are electrically powered.
Heat pumps typically consist of two parts: an indoor unit (called an air handler) and an outdoor unit (similar to a central air conditioner) which is referred to as the heat pump. Heat is absorbed and released, via a compressor, as it travels between the indoor air handler and outdoor heat pump.
Heat pumps essentially function as an air transporter by continually pumping warm air from one place to another. A benefit of installing a heat pump is that it moves warm air to where it’s desired instead of generating heat, giving you more energy efficiency.
According to the US Department of Energy:
Today’s heat pump can reduce your electricity use for heating by approximately 50% compared to electric resistance heating such as furnaces and baseboard heaters. High-efficiency heat pumps also dehumidify better than standard central air conditioners, resulting in less energy usage and more cooling comfort in summer months.
In colder climates, a supplemental heating source may be needed on the chilliest of days.
Supplemental Heating: Ductless Mini-Split System
Another popular alternative to central heating and air conditioning systems that also serves an effective supplemental heating source for heat pumps on cold days is the ductless mini-split A/C system. Ductless systems provide a more cost-effective and attractive solution for applications where the use of ducted air conditioning machinery would be impractical or unaffordable.
Our HVAC-certified contractors will gladly install a ductless heating and cooling unit you have already purchased, or show you the wide range of Carrier duct-free split systems that we have to offer.

Common warning signs that it’s time to call a technician for heat pump repairs or maintenance include:
- Reduced airflow
- Strange noises
- Higher energy bills
- Frequent cycling on and off
- Uneven room temperatures
- High humidity
- Not blowing hot air
Like annual doctor’s visits and vehicle tune-ups, scheduling regular preventative maintenance can go a long way towards keeping your heating and air conditioning system healthy, efficient, and increase the unit’s lifespan. It’s unwise to ignore your heating and cooling system when you rely on this piece of equipment daily to keep you comfortable in your Atlanta area home or office.
By scheduling seasonal maintenance service calls twice a year, our experienced heat pump technicians can inspect your system and fix minor issues before they turn into an expensive breakdown. We recommend one maintenance visit before summer and another before winter to ensure your heat pump is providing maximum comfort and efficiency.
