What’s the Best Temperature for Sleeping?

January 8, 2018 By Transfer Admin

setting your thermostat to help you sleep

Do you have a hard time sleeping?

If so, you may not have the temperature set properly for a comfortable night of rest. According to the National Sleep Foundation, keeping your room at a cool 65 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimum temperature for sleeping.

Your body naturally decreases and increases temperature during the sleep-wake pattern. Sleep is more likely to occur when your body heat decreases rather than when it increases. Therefore, lowering the temperature in your room can help you sleep better, say experts.

Here are several tips for staying cool at night:

• Buy a programmable thermostat. A smart thermostat will lower the temperature for you so you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night to do it yourself.

• Shower before bed. It seems counterintuitive that a warm shower helps cool you off, doesn’t it? However, after you get out of the shower, your body experiences rapid evaporative cooling which eventually lowers your body temperature.

• Drink some cold water. Cool your core body temperature by drinking a few sips of ice cold water before bed.

• Turn on the ceiling fan. This will help evaporate sweat from your skin and remove heat from your body (a process called evaporative cooling).

In short: If your room is cooler, you have a better chance of get a good night of rest. Think of your bedroom as a cave. Keep it dark, quiet and cool, and you should sleep like a baby.

If your heating and air system isn’t working properly and causing you to lose sleep, contact one of our experienced technicians at Gagne Heating and Air Conditioning.
